Adoption Petition

Learn about the definition for this legal term.

What is Adoption Petition?

The petition is filed before a family law judge asking for a legal termination of the existing parental rights of one or both parents and for the Order to specify the new parentage. Often, a natural parent joins in a petition with his or her new spouse asking for adoption. This requires notice to, and termination of, the rights of the excluded natural parent.
