What is Breach of Promise to Marry?

This is a breach of contract action in which one of the intended parties to the marriage backed out; the other party sued for damages. Anti-Heart Balm statutes have prohibited lawsuits for damages for breach of promise to marry. The action may still exist under the common law or statutes of some states.
