What is the MPRE?

The Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) is an exam developed by NCBE (National Conference of Bar Examiners) and was first administered in 1980. The exam is a two-hour timed exam administered 3 times a year and is made up of 60 multiple-choice questions. It is designed to assess the knowledge and comprehension of the standards related to a lawyer’s professional conduct. It is a requirement to pass the MPRE to be admitted to the bar in all but two US jurisdictions (Wisconsin and Puerto Rico). Each jurisdiction establishes its own passing score.

Find out the minimum passing score for your specific state below:

Jurisdictions Requiring it

The MPRE is required in all but two jurisdictions: Wisconsin and Puerto Rico. It is advisable to check with the bar admission agency in the jurisdiction in which you seek admission as the MPRE requirements vary from one jurisdiction to another. Two states allow for the completion of a law school course on professional responsibility instead of completing the MPRE exam (New Jersey and Connecticut) so long as the bar candidate has earned a grade of “C” and “C-“ or better.

Fees

The fee for scheduling your test appointment is $135 and must be paid by debit or credit to Pearson Vue. There is a $25 non-refundable fee to reschedule your appointment. You can reschedule your appointment for a different time or location by accessing your Pearson VUE account or by calling Pearson VUE at 888-205-1855.

If you need to cancel your appointment, you will need to do so within your Pearson VUE account or by calling Pearson VUE at the number mentioned above. After cancelling your testing appointment, you will receive a $70 refund.
